TALL TALES – The Case of
the
Growing Suspicions
PASSAGE PICKER EXAMPLE
1. Interesting Passage ~ Page 16 Paragraph 3-5
2. "Hormones are...get taller."
3. Interesting and informational
4. This passage is a very interesting passage. It informs the reader about things that their own bodies go through when growing. It also informs the reader why it can be very dangerous when one takes a tonic in an attempt to change something about their own body.
5. If you had known the possible dangers involved in taking the growth tonic, would you have still taken it or not? Why?
Personally I would not have taken it. I would not want to risk getting sick or endangering myself in an attempt to change something about my body. If I had been Jo I would have practiced dribbling so that I could still play basketball as a point guard if I continued to stay on the shorter side.
This passage adds a lot to the story because it informs the reader about scientific facts behind growing and the dangers behind taking tonics in an attempt to grow taller. It gives the reader more information about the topic which allows the reader to also make a more informed opinion and perhaps decision.

1. Passage that is Descriptive ~ Page 21 Paragraph 4 - Page 22 Paragraph 1
2. "Max had...single basket."
3. Descriptive
4. This passage is a descriptive type of passage because it uses words to create a picture in the reader's mind. Through the author's use of words, the reader is able to visually see Max and Keisha attempting to play basketball on the court.
5. If you were to add another sentence to describe both Max and Keisha as they are playing basketball, what would it be?
Once while Jo was going up for a shot, Max was paying to much attention to his untied shoelace to notice her jumping in the air right next to him.
Poor Keisha! When the ball was thrown to her by a fellow teammate she tried her best to catch it but instead it went right through the hole in her hands.
The author includes this passage in the story because it makes Max and Keisha more rounded characters. This passage allows the reader to know a little more about these two crew members and how the differ from the others within this story.

1. Scientific Passage ~ page 15 paragraph 4
2. "Cartilage is...shock absorber."
3. Scientific and Informational
4. This passage is scientific and informational because it tells the reader more about cartilage such as what cartilage is and what it is used for. It is very interesting and allows the reader to even learn about something that is inside of their own body.
5. If you were to write a simile comparing cartilage to something else what would your simile be?
Cartilage is like Jell-O because you can wiggle it.
6. The author included this passage in this story because it informs the reader in a fun and interesting way about something that involves them and their body.

1. Passage on my Own ~ Page 27 Paragraph 2
2. She popped... big ears."
3. Descriptive
4. This passage is descriptive because it tells the reader more about the type of product this growth potion is by the amount of funding that was obviously available when making this video. By reading this passage, the reader is aware of the lack of funds and even perhaps the lack of time spent on this instructional video. Therefore, the reader can also assume perhaps that the quality of the tonic will not be much better (if any better) than the quality of the video.
5. What do you think that this passage says about this product? Would you still buy Dr. Sweet's Tall-riffic Growth Potion after seeing this video? Why or why not?
6. This passage adds to this story
in many ways. It tells the reader about the quality of the product
and the type of people that are trying to sell the tonic. It also
makes one wonder why anyone would buy this growth tonic after seeing the
poor quality of the video that was provided.
